چکیده

Carbon nanoparticles were prepared by refluxing the combustion soot of natural gas in nitric acid. Transmission ElectronMicroscopymeasurements showed that the resulting particles exhibited an average diameter of 4.8( 0.6 nm, and the crystalline lattices were consistent with graphitic carbons. CNMRand FTIR spectroscopic measurements further confirmed the presence of sp carbons in the form of aryl and carboxylic/carbonyl moieties. The resulting carbon nanoparticles were found to emit photoluminescence with a quantum yield of approximately 0.43%. Additionally, the emission band energy of the carbon nanoparticle was very similar to that of much smaller carbon nanoparticles obtained from candle soot, suggesting that the photoluminescence might arise from particle surface states, analogous to the behaviors of semiconductor quantum dots with an indirect bandgap. In electrochemical measurements, two pairs of well-defined voltammetric waves were observed, which might be ascribed to the peripheral functional moieties that were analogous to phenanthrenequinone derivatives. Interestingly, the carbon nanoparticles might also be exploited as nanoscale structural scaffolds for the deposition of nanostructures of varied transition metals, leading to the formation of metal-carbon functional nanocomposites.

Spectral Properties of Gas-phase Condensed Fullerene-like Carbon Nanoparticles from Far-ultraviolet to Infrared Wavelengths

Carbon solids are ubiquitous material in the interstellar space. However, the formation pathway of carbonaceous matter in astrophysical environments as well as in terrestrial gas-phase condensation reactions is not yet understood. Laser ablation of graphite in different quenching gas atmospheres such as pure He, He/H2, and He/H2O at varying pressures is used to synthesize very small, fullerene-...

Comparison of manufactured and black carbon nanoparticle concentrations in aquatic sediments.

In this paper, we show that concentrations of manufactured carbon-based nanoparticles (MCNPs) in aquatic sediments will be negligible compared to levels of black carbon nanoparticles (BCNPs). This is concluded from model calculations accounting for MCNP sedimentation fluxes, removal rates due to aggregation or degradation, and MCNP burial in deeper sediment layers. The resultant steady state MC...

Hygroscopic growth and droplet activation of soot particles: uncoated, succinic or sulfuric acid coated

The hygroscopic growth and droplet activation of uncoated soot particles and such coated with succinic acid and sulfuric acid were investigated during the IN-11 campaign at the Aerosol Interaction and Dynamics in the Atmosphere (AIDA) facility. A GFG-1000 soot generator applying either nitrogen or argon as carrier gas and a miniCAST soot generator were utilized to generate soot particles. Diffe...

Hydrothermally enhanced photoluminescence of carbon nanoparticles

Luminescent carbon nanoparticles were prepared from natural gas soot. The photoluminescence was found to be enhanced more than 10-fold when the particles were subjected to hydrothermal treatment between 200 and 340 C for up to 15 h. This was accounted for by the effective removal of quinone moieties from the particle surface. Consistent results were obtained from UV– visible, nuclear magnetic r...

A Review of Air Pollution and Solutions Way Management Related to Ribbed Smoked Sheets (RSS) Production of Community-Level Rubber Cooperatives in Thailand: Smoke, Soot and PAHs particles

In Thailand, RSS chamber of community-level rubber cooperatives can be classified into two models: old and new model, named after the years of their establishment. Hot gas as a heat supply from Para-rubber (PR) wood (Hevea brasiliensis) combustion is used for removing moisture from the natural rubber (NR) sheets. Smoke and soot particles from PR wood burning has effected to the quality of the N...
